How do I connect Stripe to take card payments?

Connect Stripe by going to Settings → Payments in your admin dashboard, clicking "Connect Stripe", and filling in Stripe's short setup form. Money from ticket sales and donations is paid out by Stripe directly to your group's bank account. Jotterly never holds your money.

Stripe is the world's largest payment processor, used by Amazon, Shopify, Google, Lyft and millions of other businesses. Jotterly uses Stripe so we never have to touch your money or your supporters' card details directly.

Why Stripe (and not us)?

Three reasons:

  1. Money goes straight to you. Every community has its own Stripe account, and Stripe pays out to your group's bank automatically. We never sit between you and the money.
  2. Security. Stripe meets the highest security standard for card payments. Your supporters' card details never pass through Jotterly.
  3. Trust. Buyers recognise the Stripe checkout and know it is safe to enter their card.

What you will need

  • The legal name and registered address of your group (parent council, PTA, club, etc.)
  • A UK bank account in the group's name
  • A photo of ID (passport or driving licence) for the person setting up the account.
  • About 10 minutes

Steps

  1. From your admin dashboard, click Settings in the left sidebar, then Payments.
  2. Click Connect Stripe. Stripe opens to walk you through the setup.
  3. Choose Charity, club or non profit as the business type if that fits, otherwise Individual is fine for an informal group.
  4. Fill in the group's name, address, and a contact email. If you are unsure of a field, hover the ? icon. Stripe explains what they need and why.
  5. Enter the UK bank account the group uses. The account name on the bank statement must match the name you entered above.
  6. Upload ID for the person setting up the account.
  7. Submit. Stripe usually verifies most accounts within a working day.
  8. When verification finishes, you will be sent back to Jotterly with a green "Stripe connected" indicator on the Payments page.

When does the money land?

Stripe's first payout usually arrives 5 to 7 working days after your first sale, while Stripe does its checks on the new account. After that, money lands in your bank every 1 to 2 working days.

You can see exactly when your next payout is due from your Stripe dashboard.

Are there any extra fees?

Using Jotterly is entirely free. A small Jotterly fee only applies when money is moving: 2.5% on paid ticket sales and 1.5% on donations.

Stripe processes the card and charges its own fee separately, visible on your Stripe dashboard. Registered charities can apply for Stripe's non profit rate.

At checkout, buyers can choose to cover both fees.

Common holdups

  • Bank account name does not match the group's registered name. Stripe will flag this. Fix it by either updating the group name on Stripe or using a bank account with the matching name.
  • Person setting up the account is not on the bank mandate. Stripe asks so they can check a real person is behind the account. Anyone allowed to manage the group's bank account is fine.
  • First payout has not arrived after 7 working days. Check your Stripe dashboard. Stripe is usually waiting on one more document from you.
