While helping out in his grandad's overgrown garden, Tomas discovers a strange tree at the bottom of it. To his astonishment, the tree is growing dragonfruit, and from that fruit hatches a tiny, mischievous dragon he names Flicker. Having your own dragon turns out to be wonderful and chaotic in equal measure, as Tomas learns that small dragons come with surprising habits, including a tendency to leave little "presents" that cause all sorts of trouble. As he works out how to care for and conceal his new companion, the story builds toward Tomas understanding the magic of the tree and the responsibility that comes with looking after such an extraordinary pet.
